Extra Points – Observation

Observation

Last week, I was headed out of my neighborhood and stopped the car long enough to kibitz with a few neighbors. One of the more observant of them starting walking around my car with a quizzical look on his face. He said, “Hey Dan. Did you realize your tires are all bald? You need to get these changed right away.”

I got out of the car to take a look, and boy…was Scott right! The tires were simply terrible. They looked as smooth as a baby’s bottom, and were very definitely a hazard for me. Cars aren’t really my thing other than driving and admiring them. I usually wait for someone to tell me that something needs to be fixed or changed, charging my safety ( and that of my wife and anyone else in my car) to them. As a risk management consultant, I need to start heeding my own advice!

We need to be observant in business. Opportunities, like balding tires, can move stealthily through our day if we don’t pay attention and be gone forever. Being in the moment, being observant, asking questions, and taking risks open up a myriad of possibilities for us. But only if we are paying attention.

My lack of attention to my car could have proved tragic. Fortunately for me, someone helped me out. I may not always be that fortunate, so my future behavior will be changed. In business and in life, we must change our behavior as well to make sure that bad things don’t happen to us, and that the good opportunities don’t slip away.

Drive safely!
