Guest Blog: How To Quantify the Value of Your Consulting?

betsy-jordynThis is a guest blog by my friend and colleague, Betsy Jordyn. She and I have collaborated on working with consultants to accelerate their business growth. She joins me as a Master Mentor in Alan Weiss’s global consulting community. I’m happy in this week off preparing for my daughter’s wedding, to feature Betsy’s work!

How to Quantify the Value of Your Consulting

By Betsy Jordyn,  Accelera Consulting Group

One of the biggest challenges that new and seasoned consultants both struggle with is: how to quantify the value of their consulting. In other words, they know that what they do makes a difference but they can’t seem to connect the dots between their expertise and the tangible business results that their expertise creates.

If this sounds like you, here are some insights that can help you get started:

  1. Your Track Record: How much time and money have you invested in developing your expertise? In comparison to others, how does those investments impact how well you can deliver to your clients quality, speed and effectiveness?
  1. Typical Results: When a client engages to work with you, what BUSINESS OUTCOMES does your consulting create? If you are a trainer or coach, how do your programs enhance workplace culture and environment and employee engagement? If you are a digital marketing expert, how does your website or social media support create stronger consumer awareness, lead conversion, or product/service utilization?
  1. Project Value: When a client asks for you help with a solution, how does that solution change leadership, employee or customer behaviors? When those behaviors shifts, what difference do those shifts make in terms or tangible business outcomes?
  1. Consultant Contribution: When you work with a client, what INCREMENTAL VALUE do they get? Do you reduce the project cycle time (and all the cost savings and revenue upside that comes along with it?)? Do you create stronger buy-in and reduce resistance (and all the cost savings that goes along with avoiding that dreaded “flavor of the month” syndrome)?
  1. Actualized Results: When you conclude a consulting gig, do you measure the results? Are you able to demonstrate to your client the Project ROI (financial benefits offset by project costs) and their Return on Approach (the incremental financial benefits and intangible benefits offset by your fees) that you uniquely were able to create for them?

Henry Ford once balked at $10,000 bill provided by “consultant” Charles Steinmetz of General Electric whose help was needed to resolve a generator problem. In response to Fords’ objections, Steinmetz sent this: “Marking chalk mark on generator, $1. Knowing where to make the mark, $9,999.” Ford paid the bill.

When you are able to quantify your value, you are able to stand in your worth. When you are clear on why your client really needs you, it will give you the courage to confidently say: “I am not an expense to be managed. I am an investment that will generate a dramatic return.”

Accelerate Your Consulting Success

From my mailing today to consultants…. if you’re a consultant, speaker, author, or coach, this program is for you. If you’re not, but know of one, please share with them.

Accelerate success starting jan 15

Happy 2016!

Let’s be honest. You know that despite the best of intentions, most people break their New Year’s resolutions. But that doesn’t have to be you – or at least you when it comes to your resolutions to take your consulting success to the next level. If your resolution is to grow your revenue or expand your influence, you will have a much better year if your resolution sticks.

If you had a goal to become more physically fit, you’d probably put three things into place – you’d educate yourself on different approaches, you’d get a coach or trainer to guide you and find some other people with similar goals to support you. These principles hold true when it comes to a business transformation. To make a step change in your success, you also need new information, skillful mentorship and a supportive community.

Fortunately, these are the three components of the virtual workshop that Betsy Jordyn and I are hosting in January 2016. Betsy and I were intentional about ensuring that this program was more than a training program. We wanted to offer a virtual learning experience and as said before a container to support rapid business growth.

Extra Points: Are You Afraid of Yourself?

This Week’s Focus Point: Are You Afraid of Yourself?Capt Jack and Dan

When was the last time you scared yourself? I mean really and purposefully scared yourself?

We’d better first define “scared” if you’re going to be able to answer this question. My definition for the purposes of this missive is intentionally taking a risk that has as one of its options failure that could risk your future stability, risk what people think of your perspicacity, or risk your own feelings of self-worth.

My colleague Betsy Jordyn and I just completed a teleconference for aspiring consultants. One of the themes was around the concept of risk taking. I used the example of when I started my own consulting practice 10 years ago. It was a big risk to leave a good job with benefits and security of a comfortable lifestyle for the uncertainty of a career with zero clients and only hope. I committed to the mindset that Hernán Cortéz reputedly held when the explorer landed in the new world. Legend says that he burned the boats so the thought of returning home would never enter the minds of his crew. I was burning the boat of ever being employed by someone else again.

I am not suggesting that you quit your job or be reckless with your financial security. What I am saying is that many people I meet choose to be “safe” rather than take the risk of looking “foolish,” or losing security. Money can always be made. What can’t be replaced is the time and experiences. I believe it’s riskier to waste your time than waste your money. Be bold; take risks; go places; seek what makes you passionate; and once in a while burn some boats.

Unleashed Entrepreneurship: 2 Strike Hitter

Dan Weedin Unleashed-19What’s it take to be an Entrepreneur?

I get this question frequently from people. One of my favorite responses is, “You have to be comfortable with being a 2 strike hitter….”

Here’s what I mean:

In baseball, it’s common to get to 2 strikes after swinging and missing or fouling off a pitch. Once you have 2 strikes, the only way to strike out is to watch a strike go by with your bat on your shoulder or swing and miss. The goal is making contact and at least give yourself a shot at getting on base.

Entrepreneurs must be comfortable with swinging with 2 strikes. That translates into giving yourself every opportunity to “make contact” even if the pitch doesn’t look to be perfect.

As entrepreneurs, there is a propensity for waiting for that “perfect pitch.” That means the “right time” to start; the “perfect time” to take a risk; or that one moment when the stars all align to assure success.

There is no surety for success as an entrepreneur. The only thing you can do is never to get caught looking. That’s a great way ti watch opportunity sail by. There’s never any shame in striking out. Failure is a certainty is the process. Failure is also difficult for some people to get comfy and cozy with. I’m a believer in the theory that the fastest way to success and significance is through failing. I think you should fail faster.

If you’ve ever asked that question – What’s it take to be an entrepreneur – then you must start by asking yourself if you have the stomach (and resilience) to risk failure and swing with 2 strikes. You only need to make contact some of the time for the payout. But you have to always be ready to swing.

If you’d like to learn more about becoming a consultant, join my colleague Betsy Jordyn and me for a FREE virtual experience on that very topic. It’s this Friday at 9 am Pacific / 12 pm Eastern. It’s basically a fastball right down the middle of the plate….why not take a swing and see what happens?! Click here to register for this FREE event.

My Recipe for your Professional Steak & Sizzle

58842033-Dan+Weedin+%22Unleashed%22-21My colleague Betsy Jordyn and I just completed a 3-part virtual workshop experience with nearly 40 consultants from around the country on branding. The culmination yesterday actually started getting culinary…

Here’s the deal on banding for any business or practice… You have to have both the steak and the sizzle in order to be significant, interesting, and ultimately successful in promoting your unique brand. The steak is your content and the sizzle is your delivery. Here’s my recipe…

  1. Defrost the steak. Take your talent and skill out of deep freeze and that it. Specifically, truly understand your value and how you improve the condition of others. Define who those “others” are – CEOs, Presidents, or the retail buyer. You are marketing your brand to people, not organizations. Understand and believe in your brand and know clearly who benefits from it.
  2. Season the Steak. Make your content powerful. Make it unique to you based on your experience and “smarts.” Create categories that will be valuable to the readers and listeners of your intellectual property. Create content that will rise above the rest of the “noise.”
  3. Sizzle. Alan Weiss has said that if you don’t toot your own horn, there is no music. You’re responsible for branding yourself through the distribution of your intellectual property, your marketing, your networking, and your value. Here;s the thing – boring never works. You must be interesting. You do this by being contrarian; by being edgy; by being bold; by being creative; by being fearless; and by being clever. You’re genius will never be fully tapped – fully unleashed – if nobody knows you exist.

Bottom line – you can cook your steak inside that fence, but the sizzle will be the thing that unleashes the value to the world. Make no mistake, you need both. It’s a process that requires discipline, creativity, and guidance. I know Betsy and I needed help from our mentor and community….and we still utilize it!

What are you doing to make a great steak and sizzle in your business and career?

Branding R-O-I for Y-O-U

Betsy and Dan 1Betsy Jordyn and I just finished our debut broadcast for branding strategies for consultants. Here is one highlight from today…

You are the “brand.” Even if you work for a larger firm or company, or are a sales professional for a company you don’t own, you are still the desired “brand.” The key question is, “How do I advance the brand of me?”

Here are 3 things that you can immediately do…

1. Create gobs of intellectual property. Be ubiquitous. Publish, speak, blog, utilize social media, and produce videos.

2. Talk to not only your desired prospective clients, but to those people that can refer you to them. You can most easily get in front of person that can use your services when they are referred to you.

3. Be consistent in the distribution of your intellectual property. Blog regularly; send newsletters consistently; network with the right people all the time so they know your name.

It’s really just like one of my favorite shows from the 1980s, Cheers…where everybody knows your name.

Who knows your name? What to do they think of you when you’re not in the room? Are you clear and concise on your value? Are you “tight” on your publishing and speaking?

If you want to watch the 60-minute broadcast for free, all you have to do is register. You will be subscribed to the next 2 broadcasts as well. Click here to register and get the recording, so you can hear everything we talked about!
