Extra Points: Muscle Memory

Dan_Weedin_022When I coached high school basketball, one of the concepts I taught was muscle memory. In changing fundamental mechanics – like shooting a basketball – it takes 21 consecutive days to create “muscle memory.” If you stop the consecutive and consistent training when trying to change mechanics, you will lose all you gained and will have to re-start the process. Muscle memory is a crucial concept in changing mechanics in sports.

The concept is the same in your business and in your personal life.

What changes do you want to make in your business? Ask for more referrals? Improve communication skills for leaders? Grow your skills or “smarts” in your industry? Regardless of whether you want personal improvement or that of your employees, implementing long-term improvement while optimizing your investment of time and money requires daily discipline. Just like muscle memory of 21 days is necessary to change basketball shooting skills, daily discipline around change is also a requirement for changed business practices.

While we are talking about change implementation, the concept applies to our personal lives. Eating healthier, increasing hours of sleep, exercising more, and advancing skills (e.g. learning a new language) might be on your list. No matter what you want to do better, if you want to create a better life it takes more than simply identification. It requires muscle memory.

Time to flex those muscles…

Extra Points: Avoiding Organizational Amnesia

Dan Weedin Unleashed-40I was having a conversation with a client last week on the incredibly important topic of transferring knowledge. We were discussing the concept of “organizational amnesia” from my book Unleashed Leadership, and the upcoming development program I will be conducting for his company. Here is the crux of our conversation:

Organizational amnesia is best avoided when a company can successfully transfer organizational “smarts” to new employees. Development of skills – be it tactical, leadership, or proprietary – through a process of transfer from the veterans to new employees assures that a company doesn’t simple lose it’s memory when employees transition out.

While that all sounds fine, the transfer mechanism is a little more complicated.

I’ve witnessed organizations trying to transfer skills through infrequent seminars, trainings, and lectures. The information gets stored somewhere and made “available” for future use. Here’s the problem: the newer and younger employees don’t retain and retrieve knowledge that way. I’m sorry to tell you that the plethora of thick binders in your resource library are useless. When someone needs to get information quickly, especially in a crisis, the last thing they will do is seek out a binder and start looking for the answer. This process is as outdated as encyclopedias.

What organizations need to do is find how employees (especially the ones that are now being hired) best learn and retrieve information. The answer is quite simple: this generation and future ones use their mobile devices to quickly get information. They utilize videos and checklists stored in a place they can access without thinking twice. The solution is to assure that you are maximizing your investment in knowledge transfer by making certain it will be utilized in the future in the fastest and easiest way possible for the employee.

Stop using 20th century tools for 21st century employees. Make your knowledge basis easy to access and avoid organizational amnesia.

Extra Points: Going to Confession

Dan Weedin Unleashed-40On Good Friday, Barb and I attended church and then dashed into the quickly forming line to go to confession. For you that don’t know, confession during Lent is required before Easter of all practicing Catholics, and we take it down to the very last chance by going on Good Friday! I think it’s because I have less chance to mess up over just one day!

While in line, I use my handy Confession app on my mobile device to go through what’s called an “Examination of Conscience.” This private and candid deep dive into your conscience is an important exercise as part of the process to giving a thorough and good confession to the priest. I remember being a kid and thinking that I could “get away” with confessing the less egregious sins and let the others slip through the cracks of absolution unnoticed. It’s the equivalent of sticking your head in the sand, rather than face up to your biggest spiritual challenges. Now I make sure nothing gets missed!

The business translation of this process is important for any business professional – CEO, entrepreneur, or business professional. How often are you examining your business conscience? On other words, are you honestly reviewing your actions and activities related to what will make you more successful and improve the condition of others?

For example, your exam might include questions like: Are you consistently asking for referrals to accelerate your acquisition of new business? Are you taking all steps to assure the safety and security of your employees while they are at work? Are you investing time and resources into advancing your professional development in order to grow your business or career? Are you investing time in yourself to exercise and eat well in order to assure you’re operating at a peak level?

Your business examination of conscience should include the same candor that I described in my personal one preparing for confession. I’m sure there are some business leaders that would do what I did as a kid; let the most egregious “sins” slide and hope they vanish into thin air. Doing this has consequences that may be fatal to your business or your career.

The goal of confession is to unburden yourself and then go forth and try to be better. The same objective is in place for your business and career. Acknowledge the areas that need improvement in your business life, be honest with yourself, commit to improvement, and then go do your best. Then regularly do a “check-in” with a new examination to make sure you’re staying on track. By making this a habit, your business and your career will do nothing but get better and more rewarding.

Extra Points: Puzzles

Dan Weedin Unleashed-40My wife Barb and I like doing jigsaw puzzles together. One of our friends (who also likes puzzles) calls it a “disease,” and I think she’s right!

The current puzzle we’re working on is a gift from friends from The Netherlands. It’s a cartoon style picture with lots of people and activity going on around a canal in Amsterdam. The hard part is that nearly all the people (and there are a huge number of people) are wearing orange. There are three Santa Claus figures, several home country flags, and just a sea of orange with faces attached. As we started diving into it, the task seemed insurmountable.

As we spent more time with the puzzle, nuances became apparent. There were many small stories in the different scenes; we found a crocodile, a martian, and a ghost. Even though everyone seemed to be in orange, the individual people and situations made the puzzle more unique and helped us put it together. We are still working on it, but much better than when we started. We uncovered the secret of the puzzle.

Your business is like a jigsaw puzzle. What may at times seem like a jumble of people all doing the same thing and often in what appears to be chaos, has all the intricacies and nuances of our puzzle. The pieces all fit together; you just have to find the where to put them. The big picture requires effort in understanding and appreciating all the individual stories, motivations, and differences that make the process fun and exciting.

Your career is like a jigsaw puzzle. While it sometimes seems that the pieces will never really fit together (or that a couple of them fell on the floor and were eaten by the dog), by intentionally and positively looking at the big picture, honoring the struggle, and being patient, your puzzle will also come together and create the result you desire. Don’t consider the challenge as insurmountable; rather an opportunity.

I’ve heard that jigsaw puzzles are good for your brain. I’m pretty sure the jigsaw puzzles that are your business and career are good for your personal and professional growth, resilience, and spirit as long as you never give up and enjoy the experience.

Extra Points: Driving Leadership

Dan Weedin Unleashed-40News came out over the weekend that Uber board of directors would be discussing a leave of absence for its embattled CEO, Travis Kalanick. This comes on the heels of months of terrible press related to claims of sexual harassment allegations, berating drivers on video, and a Pandora’s Box of other workplace and public scandal and crisis. According to the Wall Street Journal, the board will also vote on setting up an investigation onto workplace issues.

Just because a person has the CEO acronym following their name on their business card, doesn’t mean they have a clue how to lead, manage, and inspire people. Kalanick had publicly admitted he needed to grow his leadership skills, but hasn’t shown much growth so his board is now taking more swift action to try and salvage the brand of the company.

Small and medium-sized business (SMB) leaders should take note. Just because one can start a business doesn’t mean they can effectively lead, manage, and inspire people. In order to tap into and unleash the power and potential of a business, that SMB owner or executive must intentionally enhance that part of their professional repertoire. It should be a daily discipline and requires accountability. Unlike highly-visible public companies like Uber, there often isn’t a board of directors there to do it. The metrics are most often a combination of high turnover, workplace drama, apathetic employees, and lack of production.

If you’re in any type of leadership position, I encourage you to make the development of your skills in this area a daily discipline. Read articles and books, watch videos by experts, and most importantly find an advisor (or advisors) to hold you accountable to your leadership growth goals. You’ve got your hands on the wheel; make sure you’re driving down the right road.

Extra Points: Barking at the Wind

Dan Weedin Unleashed-40Captain Jack hates the wind. Hates it. He doesn’t cower and hide from it. He gets mad. So mad that he spends an inordinate amount of energy barking furiously at it. He can’t see the wind, but he can hear it and figures it’s his mortal enemy (along with the vacuum cleaner, hair dryer, and electronic sounds emanating from mobile phones).

His persistence in expending this energy is limitless. It ends when he has successfully vanquished the wind (in his mind – Mother Nature is the real reason). What he fails to understand is that his energy has accomplished nothing but to wear him out, create chaos, and cause great stress for him and everyone around him.

Do you ever get caught “barking at the wind?”

How many times have you ever caught yourself expending great energy at something which you don’t fully control? It might be something a competitor is doing or saying. It might be a client or partner failing to return your emails or calls. Maybe it is something you control in your business, but instead of looking for a solution, you find yourself fretting or even worse, becoming our own typhoon wreaking havoc on everything and everyone in our path.

We all can be guilty of barking at our own “wind.” Some sort of calamity or issue arises and we spend our time wasting energy that would be better used solving the problem; delegating to someone else more capable to handle it; or finding out its not really a problem at all! This negative energy not only exhausts and depresses us; it exhausts and depresses everyone else around us.

If you are the one barking at the wind, stop. Identify the cause, set counter measures to deal with it, and spend your most valuable resource – your energy – on things that will help your business, career, and family. If you’re in a leadership position and have employees that are expert in barking at the wind, then it’s your responsibility to help them stop.You will be doing them – and everyone around them – a huge favor.

Captain Jack gains nothing positive by barking at the wind. He’s proven to be less than coachable. You are. Make the commitment to invest your energy on solutions, growth, and development and you’ll find yourself barking a different – and more rewarding – tune.

Extra Points: Hope

Dan Weedin Unleashed-40Dogs use their sense of smell much more effectively than we humans use all of our senses combined. On Thanksgiving Friday (we are a back-to-back feasting family), both Captain Jack and Bella had their olfactory senses on high. They could be two rooms away and still smell the turkey. stuffing, gravy, and sweet potatoes. They had hope that something would be left over for them. They hoped wrong in this case.

However, dogs are better at “hoping” than humans. Captain Jack and Bella put their hope in me to feed them twice a day; to provide them a comfortable lifestyle; to give them companionship; and to take care of them when they need it. They may not think that way specifically, but their “hope” is strong based on their experiences. In fact, it’s so strong that they never worry.

What or in whom do you place your hope?

Professionally, you place your hope in your employees and co-workers for effort and loyalty. If you’re an employee, you place your hope in your employer to pay you and treat you well. You place your hope in your clients and customers that they will continue to purchase your products and services. You place your hope in your trusted advisers for guidance and support to help you grow and protect your business. However, how many times in any or all of these circumstances do you lose hope easily, lack trust, and become anxious or fearful?

Both professional and personal hope is rooted around relationships. My dogs have a relationship with Barb and me where they have placed their “lifestyle” and life on the line in their hope. Your “hope” must start with yourself. Do you have unconditional hope that you will rise to any challenge? Will that hope transfer to your most important relationships? And finally, will your hope become so strong that you can be bold, fearless, and unleashed? Hope doesn’t have to be perfect, it needs to be consistent.

Take a cue from my dogs. Trust in yourself, your process, and the people you have chosen to surround yourself with….and then follow your nose to being unleashed.

Extra Points: The Cost of Waiting

And we never even know we have the key…”

The basic tenet of having an “unleashed” career and life is that you free yourself from your own invisible fence. The good news is that you have the key; the bad news is that The Eagles are right, you might not even know it.

There are many entrepreneurs and business leaders that choose to wait to invest in themselves. Various excuses exist as to why ranging from, “It costs too much,” to “I’m just too busy,” to “I’m going to absolutely do it next year,” to “My boss isn’t willing to pay for it.” All these excuses (and more) are rooted in the erroneous reasoning that there is little no cost in waiting. There is a huge cost…

The very best investment one can make is in themselves. And if that’s the very best investment, then one should get the very best help and never compromise on that. You see it all the time with world-class athletes, musicians, and other such notable professionals that never would consider scrimping or saving on themselves. The cost to waiting is great because you’ll never get that time back and it was time that you would have otherwise been realizing a return in that investment.

As you head into the final push of one year and ready yourself to embark on another, consider how much you invest in your own self development. Are you investing more on you than you are on your employees? Are you financing your own investment to have some real skin in the game? Will you take what you’ve learned and put it into action? Are you ready to boldly unleash yourself and see what the future really holds for you, your career, and your business?

Remember, you control yourself and your destiny. Why not go into that future fully prepared to succeed beyond your wildest dreams?
